Silent Sky Offers History and Humor
The cast of Silent Sky is gearing up for their opening night performance on Friday May 10 at 7:30pm in the Coolidge Theater in Wellsboro.
The play is based on real-life astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, and chronicles various points in her life through the many ups and the downs. With the guidance of director Jessie Thompson, all of the actors bring both poignancy and humor to their roles. “I’ve seen a few versions of this play, and I noticed that those presentations emphasized the scientific work and historical nature of the play,” says Jessie. “I wanted us to try and show them as whole people with both talents and flaws, how they find joy and cope with struggles in their lives, and to make sure we made lots of room for humor through it all.
Sisters Henrietta and Margaret Leavitt, played by Megan Gallant and Jayna Brodnicki, let the sparks fly with both humor and feisty conviction as they challenge each other to live their best lives. As Peter Shaw, actor Jeremy O’Neil will have you in stitches with his clumsy, endearing portrayal of Henrietta’s disappointed suitor. Natalie Himmelberger brings Scottish astronomer Willamina Flemming to life with bold, good natured jibes that only the Scottish do best. Lilace Guignard takes the somewhat uptight astronomer Annie Cannon to new humorous heights as she attempts to keep her outspoken colleagues in order.
While first impressions may be that the story of Silent Sky is a serious historical drama, it comes to life onstage with each actor’s humorous and sensitive portrayal of these wonderful characters. This makes for an evening that will satisfy both curious minds, and those seeking a great night of entertainment.
Performances of Silent Sky are May 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30pm, and May 12 at 2:30pm at the Coolidge Theater, 104 Main St. in Wellsboro. Tickets can be purchased at www.HamiltonGibson.org or by calling 570-724-2079. Reservations are recommended.
