The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that its Potter County Maintenance Organization will start work to excavate and remove abandoned utility lines along Route 1003 (Loucks Mills Road) between Galeton and Ulysses boroughs in Potter County on Monday, August 25. Crews will complete this work as part of a project that includes full-depth roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements, and guide rail updates that will remove a 10-ton weight limit posting from nearly 3.5 miles of roadway.

While the crews excavate and remove the utility lines, flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours for approximately two weeks. PennDOT urges drivers to exercise caution in all work zones, obey flaggers, posted speed limit and other work zone signage, and always buckle up.

Additionally, the project’s contractor will begin mobilizing equipment, installing traffic control devices, and performing drainage upgrades. In early October, the contractor will implement a detour using Routes 6, 449, 1001 (Fox Hill Road), and 1008 (Cross Road). PennDOT will issue an update before implementing the detour.

This roadway reconstruction project is the result of an Upgrade Partnership between PennDOT and Greylock Production, LLC., of Charleston, WV. Under the terms of the partnership, PennDOT and Greylock will each pay 50 percent of the $3.4 million contract. Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc., of State College, PA, is the contractor. PennDOT anticipates project completion in late December, but all construction schedules are tentative due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that its McKean County Maintenance Organization will close a portion of Route 4003 (Bingham Road) in Lafayette Township on Wednesday, August 27, for what it expects to be a one-day pipe replacement project. Replacing the 42-inch pipe located approximately 1.5 miles north of the intersection with Route 59 will prevent uncontrolled water flow from damaging the pavement and extend the service life of the road.

While the road is closed, traffic will follow a detour using Routes 646, 770, 219, and 59 around the closure. In the event of rain on August 27, PennDOT will start the work on Thursday, August 28. The department expects to complete this project in a day, but all construction schedules are tentative due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

The Potter County Farmers Market will be outdoors AT OUR NEW LOCATION on the Courthouse grounds, at the corner and across the street from the square, every Friday (weather permitting) from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The next market will be this Friday, August 22nd. Below is a list of who plans to be there and what they plan on bringing to the Market:

*  We’re back on our summer schedule of Friday markets, BUT AT OUR NEW LOCATION due to renovations on the square.  We’ll be across the street from the square, along the sidewalk to the right of the courthouse entrance, and around the corner on East Street to the driveway.

*  The outdoor market is held each Friday from May through October (weather permitting; on very rainy days, we will relocate into the Riley Gallery (if available)).  In November, the farmers market goes indoors for the winter market.

*  Market times have been established after many trial times over the years.  If you are not able to visit us and would like something particular from one of the vendors, please contact them directly.  They are willing to try to accommodate your request.

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has been named to The Princeton Review’s “2026 Best Colleges: Region by Region.” This is the 22nd consecutive year that the education services company has recognized the university.

McKean County is seeking qualified and highly motivated applicants for part time security work for McKean County Courts.

This position is a part time/at will position. The part-time security officer will be requested to work certain days and times and can either accept the assignment or decline it.  The part-time officer is assigned to days and times when a full-time officer is unavailable due to vacation, illness, etc.  Normal shift assignments are between 08:00 to 4:30 Monday to Friday. The candidate will provide screening, technical and security related assistance to other non-judicial offices in the courthouse. This position is responsible for the safety and security of all staff and public visitors at the courthouse.

Responsibilities:

Depending on assignment for that day could require several of the following tasks/duties

>Perform a daily sweep of the courthouse building and grounds prior to and at the close of business.

>Maintain order within the courthouse: settle disturbances as required.

>Assign hearing and/or meeting areas with the courthouse according to the daily schedule.

>Gather information and complete incident reports for trips falls or hazards.

>Maintain a visible security presence within the building.

>Guide assist attorneys, court attendees to the etc. the appropriate areas for hearings and meetings.

>Appear at courthouse/court facilities to address emergency situations/events.

>Screen court visitors with metal detectors for weapons and assist visitors with finding their destination.

>Assist with such other duties as may be assigned for the successful operation of the courthouse.

Special Requirements

>Capable of meeting physical demands related to the use of restrain and self-defense and the ability to handle potentially violent situations.

>Be firm while maintaining tact. Have Communication skills to diffuse potentially dangerous situations.

>Have Firearms qualifications and be willing to receive taser training.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years in law enforcement/security related position. This is a good position for retired officers, looking for some work while maintaining their daily flexibility.

Willing to carry firearms and taser while on duty. Possession of personal firearm permit and be able pass an annual qualification. LEOSA permit and qualification will be provided by court.

Eleven recent area graduates were awarded athletics-focused scholarships, managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Mason Roessner of Coudersport (PA) Area School District and Cloey Larabee of Cuba-Rushford Central School, along with Olean High School’s Caedyn Tingley, Emma Edwards and Noah Gallo received scholarships from the Big 30 Athletic Fund, each for $1,000.

Established by the Big 30 Athletic Fund committee, the Big 30 Athletic Fund at CRCF supports the organization’s effort to provide scholarship funding to deserving student athletes in the region served by the Big 30, including Allegany and Cattaraugus counties as well as areas of northwestern Pennsylvania.

The fund makes possible awards for students graduating in the Big 30 region who have participated in at least two sports for all four years of high school. Academic achievement and financial need may also be considered.

On August 18 at 11:47 Bradford city fire was dispatched to North Kendall Avenue to assist the ARG fire brigade with an oil spill, after a truck left the facility leaking mineral oil. Absorbent was put down and cleaned up. No environmental impact was present. Chief 1 (Butler) had North Kendall command.

District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer is asking for the public to provide all information they have to assist Police in the investigation into the death of a young boy in Bradford last week.  Bradford City Police and the District Attorney’s Office/County Detectives have received tips that are being (or have already been) pursued and she urges that ALL tips be provided to police.

The best way to provide tips is by calling the City of Bradford Police at (814) 887-4911 and speaking directly to an officer. Chief Michael Ward and Detective Mark Deluca are the primary investigators on the case. If you have ANY information about this child – including his care, circumstances surrounding his death or injuries, or anything else related to his welfare-  you are urged to call. All tips will be followed up on. The investigation is ongoing.

Tyler PRESCOTT has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.  His bail was set at $1 million.  An initial preliminary hearing conference/central court conference scheduled for tomorrow has been continued by the judge to a full preliminary hearing to be held at the courthouse on September 12th.  Additional charges are pending the results of the investigation, including the results of the autopsy.
