Though summer vacation is still with us, volunteers at Christmas House are preparing for one of our important missions – sending children back to school with new shoes. This project is made possible by the generous annual contribution of the N.D.H.P. Motorcycle Club and they presented a generous check to CH volunteer Charlene Smith last weekend.
Christmas House founder Alyce Reese, began this program as an outreach of the Christmas House more than 25 years ago. Only families who live in Potter County are eligible and the project is for children in preschool through grade 12.
We will begin taking applications for the school shoes on Tuesday, July 22. A parent or guardian will need to supply the ages, genders and shoe sizes of each eligible child in the family. Christmas House will be open on July 22, July 29 and August 5 between the hours of 9:30 a.m. to noon to accept applications. The telephone number is 814-274-0825. If we are not able to answer the phone, please leave a detailed message with your name and your telephone contact and we will return your call.
Deadline to order shoes is August 5. Shoes for those with confirmed orders will be available at Christmas House on Tuesday, August 19 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and noon in time for the start of school.
Christmas House is a non-profit organization piloted by volunteers and fueled by the generous support of individuals and organizations in Potter County and beyond. The First Presbyterian Church in Coudersport (402 N. Main Street) offers us space in their basement as our headquarters. Our entrance is on the north side of the building and is accessible by elevator if necessary.
Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) will offer information about a variety of state programs and services during this year’s Potter County Fair.
“I encourage anyone with questions or concerns about state government to come by and see us at the fair, or simply stop by to say ‘hello,’” Causer said.
Causer’s table will be staffed in the evenings from Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. The table will include state maps, as well as brochures and booklets on state programs and services.
People are also welcome to contact Causer’s full-time offices in Bradford (78 Main St., 1st floor; telephone 814-362-4400); Coudersport (279 Route 6 West, Office 2; telephone 814-274-9769); and Kane (54 N. The PA Department of Community and Economic Development has provided the Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) with funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). These funds are to ensure the stability and recovery of the Commonwealth’s arts and culture sector from the COVID-19 pandemic. The region in which these funds will be distributed encompasses Cameron, Elk, Forest, McKean and Potter counties.
The ARPA Pennsylvania Arts and Culture Recovery (PACR) Grant program for working artists awards a one-time $3,000 grant to artists and creative entrepreneurs who derived most of their pre-pandemic income from their artistic practice and experienced a significant pandemic-related disruption to their income. The arts are an integral component to the social, civic, economic wellbeing and vitality of our region and Commonwealth. The arts and culture sector has experienced significant economic setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic. Across the spectrum of artistic and creative endeavors, restrictions on gatherings, cancellation of events, changes in consumer behavior have truly taken a toll on the Creative Sector in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The grant program is open now through May 2026 or until funds are depleted. Funding is first come first serve.

Learned helplessness describes individuals who believe they cannot achieve their goals. It often comes with low self-esteem, depression, and passiveness. Usually, people with this mindset undermine themselves before they even try, guaranteeing failure from the start.
Jesus asked the man lying at the Pool of Bethesda, who had been sick for 38 years, if he wanted to be well. The man responded that he didn’t have anyone to put him in the water when the waters were stirred. Instead of answering the question, he explained why he couldn’t get well. He had learned to be helpless.
I recently talked with a young man who described the vicious cycle of his life and how he wants to break free from it. During our conversation, I offered him different ideas and solutions to get started. Each time, he had an excuse for why it wouldn’t work or why he couldn’t do it. Finally, I suggested he seek counseling in his area. I hope he follows through.
The problem is that if we think we can’t, we won’t. We condemn ourselves before we even begin. Sometimes worry does this to us when we fret and rehearse an outcome that never happens. Or when we sit by the phone waiting for a call that never comes. Many things keep us in bondage. They also keep us stuck in the same rut day after day. There’s another problem we often overlook. Remember the question Jesus asked the man? What would happen if he were healed? He’d have to carry his cot; he wouldn’t be able to rely on others to take him around; he’d need to get a job and support himself; and the list goes on. You see, if we’re going to get well, our lifestyle must change. Sometimes, people become used to their situation, making it hard to change. Remember, any goal without a plan is just a dream.
If you feel stuck and can’t see a way out, remember that where you are might just be the result of your own choices. Think about it.

July 11, 2025 our Angel passed on to a better life. Mary Elizabeth Lord was born on May 10, 1986 at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport, PA. She was the daughter of the late William Edward Lord and is survived by her mother, Patricia Young Lord. She is of Christian faith. Mary’s dearest relative is Uncle Robert (Sharon) Young, and Uncle John Young. Cousins: Corrie Young Wells (John) and beautiful Ashley Wells; Jay & Bobby (Liz) Young. Mary had several foster siblings. She was closest to Winnie (she thought of her as a daughter), Belinda, and Jason. Gabriela, her exchange student from Brazil was a daughter to her, too. Juanma, a young man from Argentina, visited with our family during his year in the states. Her heart had a special place for him. Mary’s cherished fur babies, Chloe and Abbey, were a central part of her life.
Mary attended Smethport Area School District until finishing her Junior year of high school. Mary then went to Paris, France through the Rotary Exchange Student Program. Upon returning to the USA she attended the Mars Area School District, Mars, PA. The Mars School District permitted her to graduate in a half year by also attending BC3.
Mary attended LaRoche College for her undergraduate studies and degree. She attended the University of Pittsburgh and received her Master Degree in the GSPIA Program.
Mary was employed by Rupp/Fiore Insurance Agency. She also worked at the Mars Foodland for Donna Miller. Mary loved Donna so—she always referred to Donna as “Grumpy”.
Mary was a volunteer her whole life. As a child and teen she helped at the McKean County Fair and Norwich Volunteer Fire Department. She traveled to fairs with Jean Ann Dean tending to cattle, pigs, and sheep. She also traveled with Ron and June Arner helping with concessions. Mary was passionate about service. Her dedication to Rotary is felt around the world. She was the President of the Rich-Mar Rotary Club. Fellow Rotarians, Beth and Michelle, became an integral part of her life with their overwhelming support and friendship. She was the lead for the Inbound Youth Exchange Program in our district #7280. Mary supported our local community by helping at Mars Applefest, Mars Home for Youth, PARC Picnic and Night at the Races.
One more note. Mary is the world’s biggest baseball fan. Growing up in northern Pennsylvania we did not have access to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Our baseball was TBS- “The Atlanta Braves”. Chipper Jones was her favorite player. Mary knew more about baseball than many people. Mary was at Bradenton, FL watching the Pirates at spring training. Because of her knowledge of baseball she was asked if she was a scout! Mary has gone to all the major league fields but seven.
Mary has many great friends who have been through her cancer journey with her. Our house has a revolving door, friends coming and going every day. We can never thank them enough. To honor Mary, in lieu of flowers please send contributions to:
