DUKE CENTER, PA — June 14, 2024: In a solemn observance of Flag Day, Scout Troop 413 from Duke Center and Troop 512 from Eldred conducted a flag retirement ceremony, respectfully retiring several U.S. flags. The ceremony, held in Duke Center, PA, drew scouts, leaders, and community members together to honor the symbol of American freedom and unity. This event also marked the conclusion of the Scouting season, with the new season scheduled to begin on September 1.
A flag retirement ceremony provides a dignified method for disposing of worn and tattered American flags. According to the U.S. Flag Code, flags that are no longer fit for display should be destroyed in a respectful manner, typically by burning. Such ceremonies are often organized by veteran groups, civic organizations, and scout troops to ensure the flags are retired with the honor they deserve.
During the ceremony, scouts from Troop 413 and Troop 512 carefully inspected each flag to confirm it was unserviceable. The ceremony included a recitation of the flag’s history and significance, and a pledge of allegiance, all reinforcing the values of patriotism and respect for national symbols.
The flag retirement ceremony not only honored national symbols but also marked the end of the current Scouting season. Scout Troop 413 and Troop 512 will resume activities on September 1. New members are encouraged to join and embark on a journey of learning, adventure, and personal growth. The start of the new season offers an excellent opportunity for those interested in joining the Scouting program.
The flag retirement ceremony conducted exemplifies the values instilled by the Scouting program. By honoring national symbols and traditions, scouts learn invaluable lessons in respect, responsibility, and leadership. As these young scouts continue their journey, they are well-prepared to become tomorrow’s leaders, equipped with the skills and values necessary to positively impact their communities and the world.
The Coach Ted Mastrogiacomo Memorial Scholarship Fund was recently created at the Elk County Community Foundation (ECCF) by a former student of Coach Mastrogiacomo, a well-loved principal and coach at St. Marys Area High School in the 1960’s.
Dr. John Lyons, who established the scholarship fund, said Coach Mastrogiacomo saved his life and many other students. Coach was a mentor and role model to John, challenging him to be the best he could be as he moved through his high school years. John said he would never have become a successful doctor of radiology without the Coach’s support. The influence of a teacher or coach goes beyond teaching the skills of a particular sport or class and extends to personal development and life skills. They are often a trusted source of advice for important life decisions.
