Robin J. MURPHY, 71, of Salamanca, NY
Robin J. MURPHY, 71, of Salamanca, NY, died Monday, May 6, 2024 in Salamanca Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born January 10, 1953, in Buffalo, he was the son of Francis J. “Frank” and Margarite M. Brockenshire Murphy.
Rob was born on a snowy January day in Buffalo, NY, January 10, 1953. His first home was at 9 Hawley Street where he lived with his older brother, Kevin, and his Mom and Dad, Margarite and Frank. After a couple of moves, and summers on beautiful Lake Erie just west of Port Colborne, Ontario, the family moved to a small college town near the Pennsylvania border called Alfred in 1963. He started at Alfred-Almond Central School and finished high school in Friendship when his parents built a home there. Rob attended B.O.C.E.S. in Wellsville for a time where he studied food service.
He worked for a number of area businesses, including the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, until he was stricken by a life-long illness while still a young man. He got along for 20 years while on disability and with his wife, the late Rebecca Scott, but later became hospitalized and was a resident of Salamanca Rehabilitation Center for the past few years, where he was cared for and loved by the many staff members. Always quick with a compliment or a joke, the staff adored him.
When younger, Rob loved family gatherings, playing horseshoes with his Dad, and caring for his many dogs from the time he was 12 years old, the last one being little Bootsie.
Rob was preceded in death by both his maternal and paternal grandparents, his Mom and Dad, and his youngest brother, Dean, in 2016. He is survived by his two brothers, Kevin (Diane) and John; his Aunt June Tice in Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins across the country.
A gathering to celebrate Rob’s life will be announced. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Cuba. Cremation was at OLNEY-FOUST Private Crematory.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

PennDOT Places Speed Display Board on Route 219 in McKean County
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) placed a radar-controlled speed display board yesterday on Route 219 in Lafayette Township, McKean County. The board will be apparent to drivers traveling North into a bridge preservation work zone where the speed limit is currently reduced to 45 miles per hour. It is intended to remind drivers to obey the posted speed limit and aid in curbing speeding in the work zone.
Preservation work on the Staff Sergeant Carl Enis Memorial Bridge, which spans Kinzua Creek approximately three miles south of the intersection with Route 59, started Monday, April 22. The contractor is maintaining two open lanes while completing this work. However, the contractor has reduced the width of these lanes to accommodate construction crews. A speed limit reduction to 45 miles per hour will enhance safety through this work zone and will be actively monitored. The radar-controlled speed display board will remain in this location until project completion, which PennDOT anticipates in July.

Wednesday Power Failure Affects Solomon’s Words Postings
On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon with temperatures in the 80’s, electrical power was lost to 63 West Penn Power customers along Main Street in Roulette.
Calls to West Penn indicated it was a transformer problem in State College and that a crew was on scene working on it so it shouldn’t be off for long. Next indication was that it was awaiting investigation and restoration was estimated AT 6:30 pm.
Two of us are dependent on home oxygen here.
And of course, our emergency power generator would not start when we needed it.
Fortunately, our son and son in law came to our rescue. They hooked an extension cord to the inverter in our van and were able to get the oxygen generator to produce a limited amount of oxygen so we could breath.
Wi-Fi, internet, and darn near everything else was not available. Cell phones were spotty on 4G, only giving partial service. Our son in law brought us his generator before it got dark.
After getting a final email from West Penn that the outage was extended to 10:30 PM, the power finally came back on at 8:30 PM as West Penn Crews finally arrived in Roulette to manually reset the circuit.
As a result, our news posting today is running behind and we’re trying to catch up.
Responders First Thought Ridgway Man’s Death Was a Homicide
Scanner reports on Wednesday morning indicated that a Ridgway man whose lifeless body was found next to the Dickinson Apartments on Mill Street was the victim of a homicide. Subsequent investigation revealed that the man had fallen from a 6th-story window.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Elk County Coroner Michelle A. Muccio-Krise released the following information in regards to a death that occurred in Elk County on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 in the borough of Ridgway.
Timothy A. Towne, 58, was found deceased outside the N. Mill Street apartment complex in the borough of Ridgway. Mr. Towne was pronounced dead at the scene by Elk County Coroner Michelle A. Muccio-Krise and following the investigation, it was determined that Mr. Towne fell from a sixth-story window.
An autopsy was completed early this afternoon and the cause of death is multiple blunt-force injuries consistent with a high-level fall.
This death appears to be accidental in nature and complicated by drug and alcohol use. There is no foul play and the investigation continues by the Elk County Coroner’s Office, the Ridgway Borough Police and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Ed. note: This story was delayed by a 6 hour West Penn power failure at our Roulette office.
