Democrats to Collect for Food Pantry in Bolivar
When the Allegany County Democratic Committee hosts its monthly “Coffee with Democrats” on Saturday, May 11th in Little Genesee, they will be collecting non-perishable food and personal care items to be donated to the Bolivar Food Pantry located at the Community Center at the Little Genesee 7th Day Baptist Church. The pantry is asking specifically for canned fruit, canned soup, and dry cereal, as these are its immediate needs.
The event runs from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Genesee Library, 8351 Main St., Little Genesee, NY and is open to all registered Democrats. Coffee and light snacks will be served. Sign up here to attend.

New asphalt road maintenance training course set for June 13
The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (North Central) announces a new in-person training course focusing on local asphalt road maintenance issues through PennDOT’s Local Technical Assistance Program
Asphalt Roads Common Maintenance Problems will be hosted by Emporium Borough from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 13. The meeting will be held in the firehall in the borough’s complex located at 419 N. Broad St., Emporium.
This course provides relevant information to individuals who must maintain asphalt pavements. The course material reviews the importance of preventive maintenance to the life of an asphalt pavement. The material will help the attendees identify common asphalt distress, the cause of the distress, and the appropriate treatments.

Allen R Baker, 74, of Emporium, PA passed away, following a lengthy illness, at UPMC Cole, Coudersport, PA on Monday afternoon (May 6, 2024) with his loving wife by his side. He was born July 23, 1949 in Waynesburg, Ohio a son of the late Clair and Frances Dennis Baker.
Allen was married in Emporium to Darlene Housler, who survives.
He graduated from Cameron County High School and then served with the US Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from Alltel where he worked for many years before he retired in 2004. He enjoyed Golfing and fishing.

Deadline Approaching
Cameron County Chamber of Commerce is continuing to accept registrations for the Town Wide Yard Sales on Saturday, May 18. A map will be created of those sales and available starting Monday, May 13. The date was selected to coincide with the annual Ridgway Chamber of Commerce yard sales. “This creates a Route 120 treasure hunt,” according to Tina Solak, executive director of Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.
A separate Facebook page has been created so that people can see where the sales are planned and what items may be offered for sale. The page is named Cameron County Town Wide Yard Sales.
New road maintenance training course set for June 26
RIDGWAY – The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (North Central) announces a new in-person training course focusing on local road maintenance issues through PennDOT’s Local Technical Assistance Program.
Erosion and Sedimentation Control will be hosted by Brookville Borough from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, June 26. The meeting will be held in the large meeting room in the borough’s complex located at 18 Western Ave., Brookville.
The course is designed to educate municipal employees on erosion and sedimentation control, with a focus on post-construction stormwater management. Topics covered in the course will also include erosion and sedimentation control measures and installation procedures. Examples of those control measures will also be discussed. The course will also focus on the municipality’s role in how to monitor post-construction stormwater management and the steps involved in developing erosion and sediment plans.
McKean County Collaborative Board Meets
The McKean County Collaborative Board held their bimonthly meeting on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the Hamlin Library in Smethport. Members of the Collaborative Board include community stakeholders whose vision is to develop collaborative solutions that strengthen well-being for all. The Board Chairs, Dan Wertz on McKean County Department of Human Services and Stephanie Eckstrom of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and the Convener, Jenn Douglass of The Guidance Center, work in conjunction with the Steering Committee to develop the meeting agendas and arrange guest speakers.
The mission of the McKean County Collaborative Board is to identify and respond to community needs by providing opportunities for collaboration. The Collaborative Board meets bimonthly on the first Wednesday of the month. The purpose of these meetings is to share relevant information, opportunities, requests, and/or resources amongst Collaborative Board Members – with the broader purpose of strengthening our communities.

Alice J. “A.J.” Stiles “One of a kind”
COUDERSPORT, PA—Alice J. “A.J.” Stiles, 84, a lifelong resident of Coudersport, passed away with her loving family by her side on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in UPMC Cole, Coudersport, after a short illness.
Born on Thursday, March 14, 1940, in Bethlehem, PA, she was a daughter of Edward Chester Snyder Sr. and Hila M. Pearsall Snyder Euken. She was the stepdaughter of Otto (Shiner) Euken. A.J. was first married to Sam Long who she had 5 children with and in 1977 married Ted Stiles, who passed away on March 28, 2012.
A.J. obtained her GED while raising her family as a single mother. At age 62, she received her medical coding certification from Pitt Bradford after her position was terminated due the closing of Midland Optical in Coudersport.
For many years she and her husband, Ted, owned and operated Ted & A.J.’s Snack Shop in Coudersport. She also had been employed by the former Sears Store in Coudersport and had been a bartender at various establishments in the area. She was known for “A.J.’s Cussin Club” at the former Northwoods Restaurant. The monies collected for “cussin” funded her yearly pig roast.
A.J. was a member of the Red Hat Ladies Society and was very involved with Potter County Special Olympics, having served in many capacities in the organization. She was a member of Potter Post 192 Ladies Auxiliary in Coudersport, a member of the Office Girls in Coudersport, a Board member of A Way Out and a member of the Coudersport Senior Center.
A.J. was the Baroness of Sealand. She loved camping, going to the casino, and playing cards. She was known as the card shark of the game 31. She loved her shoes, but her greatest love was her family.

She was born July 18, 1938 in Sterling Run, daughter of the late Raymond and Hazel Spalti Hicks. She was a lifelong resident of the area, attended Benezette Schools, and was formerly employed at Powder Metal Products, Elk Regional Hospital, and Elk Haven Nursing Home.
On July 15, 1961, in Kersey United Methodist Church, Janet married the late John Richard Miller, who preceded her in death on December 14, 2007.

Geno was a self-owner operator of GM DeFilippo Trucking.
He loved to watch the Buffalo Bills, golfing, NASCAR, NCAA, and the World Series.

Born on September 28, 1928, in Jasper, New York, she was a daughter of George and Hazel Johnson Morton.
Ruth was a graduate of Friendship Central School.
She had worked for Olean Advanced Products for 34 years, retiring in 2001.
Ruth served on the Richburg Central School Board of Education for eight years and at one time was the president of the school board. She was a 4-H leader for ten years and loved gardening. She was a great sports fan, both local and professional. Wallpapering and sewing were several of her other passions. She will be remembered for her homemade pies, baked beans, and homemade bread rolls, but spending time with her family was the most important part of her life.

UPMC Offers Safe Sitter® Babysitting Classes
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa., May 9, 2024 – UPMC is hosting Safe Sitter® babysitting classes across north central Pennsylvania. Classes prepare students ages 11 through 16 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Students learn life-saving skills such as how to rescue someone who’s choking, and helpful information like what to do if there’s severe weather. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use CPR manikins to practice choking rescue and CPR.
