St. Marys Area United Way Holds Annual Meeting

Elk County– The St. Marys Area United Way board of directors met on January 25, 2024, for their annual board meeting. The meeting was hosted by the City of St. Marys and held within the city chambers conference room. Two important agenda items included the voting for the 2024 grant award recipients and the vote to set 2024 campaign goal to $220,000.

The board approved the 2024 campaign goal increase from $200,000 to $220,000. The board agreed that this campaign goal increase was necessary to meet all the needs of our local nonprofits. Several board members suggested the need to leverage more funding from company payroll programs, the need to ask existing donors to consider increasing their donations, and to seek out additional local companies that may have an interest in supporting the St. Marys Area United Way. Scott Aaron Bebko, 52, of Bradford, Pennsylvania,

Scott Aaron Bebko, 52, of Bradford, Pennsylvania, died all too suddenly while at work on January 17, 2024.

Scott was born on April 8, 1971, in Erie, PA.  He was the beloved son on the late Ronald J. and Peggy Comita Bebko. Scott graduated in 1989 from Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie. He then attended Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, where he pledged and became an Active in the Alpha Phi Omega (ABN) fraternity organization. This was one of the most pivotal and happy times in Scott’s life, and where he made lifelong friends.

Scott lived in Richmond, Virginia for 5 years, where he worked for Time-Life. After moving back to Olean, NY in 1999, Scott met the love of his life, his wife, Lori. On August 21, 2004, they were married in Allegheny State Park. They were each other’s best friend.

Scott worked in many trades, with the majority being in sales. He was employed by Bradford Forest Products, Autozone, Walmart, and then found his calling at Keystone Powdered Metal in Lewis Run, Pennsylvania. He was employed as a CNC Operator at the time of his death.

Scott was the epitome of honor, loyalty, and goodness. Anyone who met him was better for having the opportunity. His love and expertise at Magic the Gathering and D&D was legendary.

Causer to Hold Satellite Office Hours

BRADFORD – State Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) will hold monthly satellite office hours on Thursday, Feb. 1, at the following locations:

  • Emporium Borough Office – 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Port Allegany Borough Office – 11 a.m. to noon.

Services available include assisting constituents with state-related issues or concerns, assistance with driver license and vehicle registration applications, and help in filling out applications for various state programs, such as the senior citizen Property Tax/Rent Rebate and PACE prescription drug assistance programs.

Geraldine P. “Gerri” Hoffman, 80, of 148 Upper Cherry Road, Kersey, PA

Geraldine P. “Gerri” Hoffman, 80, of 148 Upper Cherry Road, Kersey, PA passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Pinecrest Manor.

She was born February 27, 1943 in St. Marys, daughter of the late George and Elsie Martin Pfaff.  She was a lifelong resident of the area, graduated from the first graduating class at Elk County Christian, Class of 1962, and was employed at Sylvania.

On November 23, 1962 in Sacred Heart Church, Gerri married Louis Hoffman, who survives.  They were blessed to share 61 years of marriage.

Potter County Artisan Co-op plans Cross Stitch classes in February

Julia Overton-Healy, Cross Stitch Artist, will be teaching a Beginner Cross Stitch class on Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Potter County Artisan Center.   Participants are asked to bring a small pair of sharp scissors.  All materials, including the pattern, are provided.  Students should choose two colors to be used in the project when registering. 

Curt Weinhold will be teaching a beginner/intermediate photography class at the Potter County Artisan Center on Saturday, Feb. 24 from 1;30 pm – 3;00 pm. Curt is a PaWilds Juried Artisan, former wedding photographer and teaches starry sky photography at Cherry Springs State Park. Curt will teach students how to set up their cameras for varying subjects and acquaint them with shutter speed, f-stop and ISO.  Also covered in this class; the importance of proper lighting, photo composition, landscape photography and portraits.  This class is geared towards cameras with interchangeable lenses (DSLR). Please bring cameras to class.

2 Men Down at Domtar Paper in Johnsonburg

At about 3:00 PM on Thursday, Johnsonburg Fire Dept. & EMS have responded to Domtar for a report of 2 men down, possibly from carbon monoxide or a chemical. Hazardous materials equipped firefighters are recovering the workers, bringing them to fresh air. Air Medical has been requested but is unavailable due to the fog. Details are sketchy.

St. Marys engine requested to Penn Highlands Elk hospital to assist with decontamination.

Multiple Depts. Battled House Fire on River Road in Lindley, NY

Lawrenceville Fire Department 

This past Tuesday, the Lawrenceville Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on River Rd. in Lindley, NY. LFD was quick to respond – Tanker 8-5 responded with a crew of 2 and Engine 8-3 responded with a crew of 4. When the LFD arrived on scene, our firefighters immediately got to work fighting the blaze. Working with multiple fire departments from a Steuben County and Tioga County, crews worked together to battle the flames.

ServSafe Food Safety Certification

ServSafe is a certification program developed by the Restaurant Association Education Foundation. The course meets certification requirements for individuals who are responsible for the safe handling of food in restaurants, schools, elder care facilities, lodges, bed and breakfasts, community centers, and other food concessions (organizations or businesses that sell or prepare food on a regular basis).

This course, taught by Rick Kralj, Penn State Educator, is scheduled for Wednesdays, February 14 and 21, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Extension office in the Gunzburger Building, 1 North Main Street, Coudersport, PA. Donald R. “Bear” Dalrymple, 65, of Coudersport, PA

Donald R. “Bear” Dalrymple, 65, of Coudersport, PA passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 19, 2024.  Bear was born on July 19, 1958, in San Mateo, CA, the son of the late Linda Dalrymple.  

Bear worked for many years as a computer programmer for Adelphia, Level 3 and Ithaca College. Bear was a member of Gospel Tabernacle, in Coudersport and enjoyed playing guitar and riding motorcycles. Before moving to Coudersport, Bear was ordained by Calvary Chapel in 1996 and served as the planting pastor of Vista Christian Church right outside of Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas.  He was passionate about serving his Lord and helped many area churches with worship and preaching.

Bear is survived by his two daughters, Bonnie and Caitlyn, a brother David Hickey of Lathrop, CA; and close friends; Pastor Joe Gerhart of Karthaus; Roxanne Bencardino of Austin; Pastor John and Gina Minor of Coudersport; and Walt Miles Jr of Roulette. 

A celebration of Bear’s life will be held on February 1st at 6:00 pm at the Gospel Tabernacle. 420 Route 6 West, Coudersport.

The Elk County Democratic Committee will be hosting its “Donuts, Democrats & Democracy” Petition Signing event at the 2024 Victory Headquarters in downtown St. Marys this Saturday, Jan. 27th from 10:00am to 12:00pm.

Registered Elk County Democrats will be able to stop by the Headquarters, located at 210 Brusselles Street, enjoy a donut and coffee and sign petitions for the party’s endorsed candidates including President Joe Biden, US Senator Bob Casey Jr., State Treasurer candidate Ryan Bizzarro and State Auditor General candidate Malcolm Kenyetta. Casey, Bizzarro, and Kenyetta are no strangers to Elk County, having been at numerous local events over the past few years. Petitions will also be available for Zach Womer, candidate for the US House of Representatives – 15th District, and Presidential convention delegates, along with several State Attorney General candidates.

William C. Hendrickson, 75, of Driftwood, PA

William C. Hendrickson, 75, of Driftwood, PA passed away at his residence on Wednesday (January 24, 2024) morning following a lengthy illness.

He was born September 15, 1948 in Altoona, PA a son of the late Charles and Jean Fredrick Hendrickson. On June 22, 1991 in Emporium Country Club he married Marsha Jeffrey, who survives.

Bill graduated from Cameron County High School in 1966. He received a bachelors degree in education from Penn State, and was a lifelong Penn State football fan. He served two years in the US Army during the Viet Nam War

He retired from the Postal Service in 2010. He loved birding, traveling, hunting, fishing, the family land in Nebraska, and cats.

George graduated from Cameron County High School and served with the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed trapping and being with his family.

Thomas M. Rodgers, 74, of Bradford, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, peacefully at his residence.

Born March 19, 1949, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Robert C. and Ruth E. (Nick) Rodgers Sr.

He was a 1967 graduate of Bradford High School, and a graduate of Paul Smith College in Lake Placid, with a degree in Forestry.

Tom worked at Dresser Manufacturing for 43 years as a machinist, he also was the head chef at Roma Villa Restaurant.

Tom loved to hunt and play poker with his family.
