Cameron County Chamber of Commerce hosting the annual All Fired Up Kickin Ash BBQ competition on Saturday September 23. Emporium Food Market is the prime sponsor. The highlight of the event is the mystery meat competition. Competitors can take home a $500 cash prize.
“The event showcases the culinary skills of entrepreneurs and allows them to sell their items,” according to Cameron County Chamber of Commerce executive director Tina Solak. Music drinks and food draws a crowd to the event each year which is held in the town square in Emporium. Purchasing ribs, sandwiches and side dishes along with dessert begins at noon.
Contestants can enter as many categories as they desire for one registration fee of $50.00. They include: wings, brisket, turkey, ribs, pork, dessert, and side dishes. An additional fee is charged to enter the mystery meat competition.

On September 3, 2023, at 7:30 P.M., Troopers out of SP Olean responded to Cheese Factory Road in the town of Allegany for a vehicle that struck multiple people.
Investigation determined that a 2014 Ford Fusion operated by Peggy J. Errera, 70 of Bradford, PA, was backing out of a driveway into the roadway. Errera intended to go straight, but never straightened the wheels as she accelerated the Ford. The Ford accelerated back into the driveway and struck six people gathered in the front lawn of the residence.
One of the victims, Ronald S. Piechota, 81 of Schenectady, NY was pronounced deceased at the scene. Another 66-year-old victim was air lifted and taken to Erie County Medical Center with severe injuries. The four other victims are all being treated at local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
Errera was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert and no signs of intoxication were detected.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in this investigation.

Penn College fall sports openers have mixed results
On the first weekend of the fall sports season, Pennsylvania College of Technology teams not only tasted action for the first time but found varying levels of team and individual success in the process.
Men’s soccer
In their season opener on Friday, the Wildcats got second-half goals from Brandon Ratjavong, of Gordonville, and Hunter Gabloff, of Succasunna, New Jersey, along with an outstanding defense that limited Keystone College to just two shots — none on goal — in a 2-0 shutout win. The victory was Penn College’s first against Keystone after going 0-5-1 in their previous six meetings.
At McDaniel College on Sunday, McDaniel scored the lone goal in the 60th minute as Penn College went to 1-1-0 on the early season. McDaniel led in shots on goal, 7-3, with Penn College goalie Cole Catherman, of Selinsgrove, turning back six.
Jane L. Cogan, 80, of Crosby, passed away peacefully Friday (September 1, 2023) at Penn Highlands Hospital, Dubois.
She was born July 12, 1943 in Kane, the daughter of Clinton and Alva (Anderson) Silfies. On Sept. 4, 1971, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Smethport, she married Kenneth E. Cogan, who passed away Feb. 18, 2018.
Jane was a Smethport High School Class of 1961 graduate. She worked at Sena Kean Manor for many years where she retired as the supervisor of house keeping and laundry. She then worked part-time as the Post Mistress at the East Smethport U.S. Post Office.
Jane was a member of the Crosby Community Church. She was a very active member in the church and in her community as a volunteer for several organizations over the years.
She is survived by:

In addition to her parents and husband, Jane was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth A. Cogan; a son-in-law, David M. Platko; and two brothers: John and William “Bill” Silfies.
Services for Jane will be private. Burial will be in the Clermont Cemetery, Clermont.

The Port Allegany High School Class of 1973 reunited over the summer for the Golden Anniversary of their high school graduation. The two-day event began with a gathering at the Port Allegany Moose Family Lodge for the Class of ’73 followed by the PAHS 70s Reunion held the next day for those graduating between 1970 and 1979. The 70s Reunion was held at the Veterans Memorial, Inc. Mistress of Ceremonies was Kimball Nelson. Music was provided by Karizma, Barb Headley and John Meade.
The 70s Reunion collected money to donate to the Port Allegany Community Park Pool. Kris Arbogast Hawkes from the Teacher’s Pet Rescue is pictured receiving a check from Ed Vicic from Eddie’s on Main, Kimball Nelson from Howard Hanna Professional and Julia Overton-Healy. The $1,500 was raised at the Dog Days of Summer event held at Eddie’s on Main in Port Allegany. In addition to the check, Teacher’s Pet Rescue received a truckload of supplies needed at the rescue including paper towels, disinfectant, dog food and more. The fundraiser included a silent auction, Little Mountain Winery Tasting, music by Karizma and a “Top Your Hot Dog & Load Your Tater Tots” afternoon, with ice tea, lemonade and ice cream.
Firehouse Subs, founded by firemen, will be in Galeton for your eating pleasure Sept. 4 through Sept 9 – times are 11 AM – 7 PM each day. This is the third year for them to be in Galeton. The location is in John J. Collins Park and the entrance is on Park Lane off of West Street. This is a fundraiser sponsored by Galeton’s Goodyear Hose Company. BRADFORD, PA – Anyone looking to make the most of the remaining summer weather should mark their calendars for Thursday, September 7 for the September Walk with a Doc event. The event is hosted by Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and the Guidance Center (TGC) and will take place at Richard E. McDowell Trail on Campus Drive, starting at 5pm.
The walk is free and open to everyone. The event is coordinated through a partnership between the Guidance Center and BRMC. The providers that will be leading the walk this month are from Upper Allegheny Health System’s (UAHS) orthopedics and sports medicine practices. Kent Costello, PA-C, and Sarah Heidler, PA-C, will be educating participants on the topic of hip fractures before the walk.
An alternate indoor location has been reserved for the event in the case of inclement winter weather. The location is the University of Pitt at Bradford Fitness Center located at 300 Campus Drive, Bradford, PA 16701. Any changes in the location will be announced on the Walk with a Doc Bradford Facebook Page the day of the event.
