Two Area School Districts Receive Grants for Cafeteria Upgrades Grants were awarded to two area school districts this week to help with the purchase of needed cafeteria equipment. The Oswayo Valley School District was awarded more than $43,000, while the Smethport Area School District received more than $34,000. The grants come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and are awarded to schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program. Schools often use the grants to purchase items such as new refrigerators, freezers, stoves and dishwashers. Across the state, more than $2.7 million in funding was awarded to 130 schools. Bill to Bring Justice for Child Sex Abuse Victims Moving in House We finally returned to voting session this week and worked on legislation that aims to bring justice for adult survivors of child sex abuse whose cases are beyond the statute of limitations. House Bill 1 of special session proposes an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution to allow such victims to take civil action against their alleged perpetrators, regardless of when the abuse occurred. The “window” to take such action would be opened for a period of two years. Amending the Constitution requires the passage of identical legislation in two consecutive sessions, as well as the approval of voters in a referendum. This legislation was previously approved twice and poised for placement on the ballot until the Wolf administration failed to properly advertise the question as required by law. House Bill 2 aims to provide the same opportunity to child sex abuse victims but through a regular statute rather than constitutional amendment. Many legislators believe the constitutional amendment is required because the change could otherwise be unconstitutional. As of this writing, the bills are pending final consideration in the House. It is unknown if the Senate will consider them. Fremer and Bizzak End Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide Predator Hunt or Trap
Johnsonburg, Pa.: Joe Fremer tripled on coyotes this past weekend for Rolfe Beagle Club’s
Statewide Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap. Joe harvested a 32.0 female coyote Friday morning in
Jefferson County when he spotted the coyote in a field with his infrared scope. Joe switched to
Elk County Friday evening and harvested a 32.6# female coyote over bait at 7:30 p.m. On
Sunday, Joe harvested a 30.0# female coyote at 12:30 a.m. in Elk County that came in to an
electronic call. Joe shoots a .223 rifle.
Josh Bizzak was the last successful hunter to register his harvest on Day 6. Josh shot a 29.4#
female coyote in Jones Township, Elk County, shortly after midnight on Saturday. Josh used a
.17 Hornet and an electronic call. Josh started the weekend off by harvesting a female gray fox
weighing 11.6# on Saturday evening near 10:00 p.m.
Furthermore, Josh gave the spectators an “ooh and aah” moment when he brought out an
otter he had harvested earlier and frozen. Josh just knew the young folks watching the weigh-
in would appreciate seeing an otter. Well done, Josh!
Hunters are reminded that Rolfe Beagle Club will be holding their 11 1h Annual, Statewide, 10-
Day Coyote and Crow Hunt from August 30 to September 9.

Martens are true omnivores eating a large diversity of mammals, plants, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The largest portion of their diet is made up of rodents, plant material and insects.

NEW ALBUM RELEASE SHOW FOR POCONO JONES & THE BEAR IS THIS SATURDAY, FEB. 25
A release show for “Live at Cambridge Sound Studios,” the first album by Pocono Jones & The Bear is this Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro.
The Bear is folk/blues artist Paul Wilkinson who lives in the Philadelphia area, but is originally from Westfield and Pocono Jones is Brad Hinton.
Wilkinson and Hinton have been performing as a duo for about five years. This is the first album the two have done together. They met about 15 years ago through bands they both played in around the Philadelphia area.
They will perform ten selections from their live acoustic album recorded during the pandemic in a back-to-the-basics folk music session. Most are familiar songs and four are originals.
Wilkinson was born and raised in Westfield. “My dad and brother both played guitar. I started playing guitar when I was 12,” he said. “I jammed with friends in high school.” In 2001, he graduated from Cowanesque Valley High School.
“I have been living in Chester County, Pa. for almost 20 years,” Wilkinson said. “I was more serious about music in West Chester Pa. where I performed at open mics and made new friends. Mason Porter was the first band I played with that released albums – about five. Since then, I have released my own album ‘400 Bears.’”
Asked why they had decided to release their new album in Wellsboro, Wilkinson said, “We have toured up to Wellsboro before and played at the Roost. It is always great to come back to my home area. And the Deane Center seemed like a great opportunity to celebrate our new record.”
The release show is BYOB with audience members encouraged to bring their favorite beverages and snacks.
Admission is $20. To purchase tickets and reserve a table, call 570-724-6220 or visit deanecenter.com.

Think About It
Secret Place
by
Pastor B.J. Knefley
Do you have a secret place, a place that you can be alone? It’s not that it’s actually secret but it’s your go to place when you want peace and quiet. For some oddly enough it’s the bathroom. For others it might just be a chair where they can curl up with a hot beverage and a book. I actually have a couple. In the house I have the basement, “Cave”. Although not finished, it is complete with a couch, comfortable chairs and a fireplace. Soft lighting sets it off into a quiet and cozy nook. I also have the Sunroom. It’s heated and filled with windows. Finally, on the hill behind my house is a swing. Even in the winter, I can find time to escape to that spot for quiet reflection and solitude. One of my granddaughters, after being out of breath from walking up the hill, asked me why I had put the swing so far up the hill. I replied that it keeps people away, she replied, “It works”.
The reality is we all need a quiet place to reflect and think. We need alone time, or down time as some call it. It’s healthy and rejuvenating at the same time. It’s a place to destress. Hopefully it’s a place that others will let you be without interruption. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes there’s a Martha in our lives. If you’re not familiar with Mary and Martha, you can read about them in Luke 10:38-42. The Martha’s in our life believe that “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”. In other words, you should be doing something other than sitting around. Growing up it might have been said like this, “If you can’t find something to do I’ll find something for you”. Sadly, there are many who feel guilty for taking down time. They feel that they need to be doing something and if they’re not then somehow that makes them bad or less valuable.
Even though I have my secret places I still struggle with being idle for too long. Consequently, I really don’t rest. But if I’m going to live like Jesus lived then I need to learn to be okay with solitude. I don’t need to be busy all the time and even though I can hear the voice of my father telling me that he’ll find something for me to do, I have to remember that being quiet is okay. Quieting the accusing voice isn’t that easy is it? Thank about it.
