Leslie D. Field, 73, of 1995 Route 305, Cuba, NY passed away December 23, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester.

Born April 14, 1949 in Olean, he was the son of Ray E. and Nellie Bly Field. He married Bonnie Powell, who survives.

Leslie was a veteran of the United States Navy and worked as an NDT inspector for Walt Disney World as well as Dresser Rand in Olean and Wellsville.

He was a longtime member of the Southside Union Chapel, the Steel Workers Union, and the Christian Motorcycle Association. He also loved the Green Bay Packers, working on cars, riding his motorcycle, playing his guitar and writing music. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Leslie is survived by; two daughters, Misty (Michael) Vossler of Orlando, FL., and Michelle (Freeman) Bridge of Shinglehouse, PA; five grandchildren, Ashton, Julien, Levi, Luc, and Oliva Grace; one sister, Anna Catherine Howard; and many nieces and nephews.

He predeceased by; one daughter, Loriann Field; one grandson, Ethan Ray; and his siblings, Harold Jones, Helen Berard, and Linda Cook.

Friends will be a received at the Southside Union Chapel, 647 S. Union Street, Olean on Monday (January 2, 2023) from 10am-1pm. Funeral services will begin at 1pm. Burial will be at a later date, and at the convenience of the family.

December is the first month of winter. There was a little something in the month for everybody.

The first few weeks started off relatively mild with temperature readings in the 20’s 30’s and even 40 degrees on the 6th. From then on it got colder with morning readings in the teens and low 20’s.

We had our first below zero reading of the winter of minus 4 degrees on the 24th then it stayed in the single digits for the next few mornings with strong winds. The National Weather Service issued warnings for wind chills of minus 35 degrees. For Christmas eve and Christmas day it was suggested that we should stay indoors.

However, the last week of the month we had a warming trend with readings in the 30’s and 40’s.  Pine Creek along River St. was clogged with an ice jam from the West Street bridge  and upstream for about 300 yards.  The warmer temperatures caused the ice jam to break up and go downstream. So there you have it for the first month of winter.

The average high temperature for the month is 32 degrees and the average low is 18 degrees. Last year we received 5.43″ of rain and melted snow. This year the reading was 3.44″ of rain and melted snow. In 2021 we received 3.14″ of snow and this year we received 5.22″  We had 14 days of 1″ of snow on the ground with the maximum reading 0f 3″ on 4 days.

We had 2 mornings with fog and ice glaze on one morning.

For the year (2022) the total rainfall was 38.22″ which is 4.07″ below normal We measured 46.53″ of snow which is 7.47″ below normal.

DANVILLE,PA – Geisinger Hospital is still on lockdown and one female is confirmed dead after a shooting in the hospital’s employee parking.

The shooting took place around 5:25 PM according to reports.

EMS units are now able to go to the hospital by using the ED department entrance. Previously all incoming emergency units were redirected to other hospitals as police responded to the hospital for an active shooter.

Police are currently investigating the shooting. The suspect is unknown at this time and is still on the loose, according to police.

State police remain on the scene, along with police staff from Columbia and Montour counties.

State Police Arrests Suspect in Idaho Student Homicides

The Pennsylvania State Police today assisted the City of Moscow, Idaho Police Department, Idaho State Police, and the FBI in the apprehension of a suspect in the homicides of four University of Idaho students that occurred Nov. 13.

Bryan C. Kohberger, 28, was arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant early this morning by members of Troop N and the Special Emergency Response Team at a home in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County. Kohberger was arraigned before on-call Magisterial District Judge Michael Muth and remanded to Monroe County Correctional Facility pending extradition to Idaho.

Carol Lee Armagost, 68, of DuBois, PA

Carol Lee Armagost, 68, of DuBois, PA died Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital.

Born on January 4, 1954 in DuBois, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Ella V. (Milliron) Armagost.

Carol moved to DuBois in 2019 after living in Emporium, PA for 45 years.

She retired from GKN Sintered Metals in Emporium as a technician after 40 years of service.

Carol is survived by one brother, William L. Armagost and his wife Deanne and one sister, Nancy Jo Horak and her husband Edward both of DuBois, PA; two nieces, Tammy and Susan; and three nephews, Rich, Alex and Zack.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2022 from 10 – 11a.m. at the Baronick Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Pastor Terry Felt officiating.

Burial will take place in Morningside Cemetery.

UAHS increases wages throughout the healthcare network

Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS) is making a huge investment in its workforce that will affect the employees at Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), Olean General Hospital (OGH) and the ancillary facilities with an increase in wages. 

The over $3 million investment was announced to staff on Monday, December 19 with the market adjustment increase taking place in 2023. Current employees will see increases starting January 1.

“One of my initiatives since taking the role of president has been to change the culture,” said Jill Owens, MD, president, BRMC, OGH.  “I want to show that we’re focused on making UAHS a great place to work.  Our team members are the most valuable asset we have and an investment in them will help play in our success as the leading healthcare network.”

Not only will employees see an increase in their paychecks but new hires will also start at a higher rate.

Smethport Fire Dept. Has Busy Morning

Smethport Fire Department Inc.

Busy morning for Smethport Fire Police. First call came in at 0726 to 8271 Route 46 for a tractor trailer blocking the highway after attempting to turn around in a private driveway. A large wrecker needed to be brought in to remove the truck. PSP was on scene. 270 (J Dougherty) had command. Fire Police were on scene for aprx 2 hours.

A second call was dispatched at 0958 for traffic control on Route 6 West for medical call with Port Allegany Ambulance and Utility 25. Emergency personnel were unable to access the driveway with vehicles due to icy conditions. Traffic control.was provided for aprx 45 minutes.

Calling all thespians! So you’ve never acted before but would love to? Come learn the essential skills needed to be on the stage. Even if you are not a novice, this is an excellent opportunity to refresh those skills and maybe learn something new to add to your repertoire, such as improvisation or different techniques. The local theatrical group, Potter-McKean Players, has plans to offer productions in the upcoming months. This course will teach you what you need to be ready for those auditions.

This 4-part course will be taught by local director Paul Herzig and actor Jared Empson, of Eliot Ness Fest fame. The classes will take place on Tuesdays, January 10 – January 31, 2023 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Education Council’s Coudersport office. The cost of the course is $25 per person.
